“From Air Force to AGT: Benjamin Hightower Stuns with ‘Pink Pony Club’”

When Benjamin Hightower stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, the crowd had no idea just how powerful his story—and his voice—would be. The U.S. Air Force veteran, who spent seven years on active duty, chose to audition for Season 20 with Chappell Roan’s electrifying anthem “Pink Pony Club”. The result was a performance that left the audience on its feet and the judges deeply moved.

Hightower’s love for music started early, inspired by a childhood trip to Broadway to see The Phantom of the Opera. But life first took him on a different path: military service. After years of dedication to his country, he made the bold decision to trade in his uniform for the spotlight, calling it “the hardest, scariest choice I’ve ever had to make.”

This wasn’t his first time on the AGT stage. In 2017, Hightower performed as the lead singer of the Air Force a cappella group In the Stairwell, who made it all the way to the semi-finals. But this solo audition was different—it was personal. Before performing, Hightower explained that the song’s story, about leaving Tennessee to find freedom and self-expression, resonated with his own journey. With his mother watching from the audience, he poured every ounce of emotion into the performance, saying afterward: “I’m singing it to her.”

The judges were quick to praise him. Sofia Vergara called it “the perfect audition,” while Mel B admired his “raspiness and vibrato.” Simon Cowell, visibly touched, said, “I love that song, love your version… I think you’ve got a great heart.” With four resounding yes votes, Hightower secured his place in the next round.
