When Alice Fredenham decided to audition for ‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ she did not notify anyone, including her family and friends. That way, if she was turned down by the judges, she would not have to notify anyone. When Alice came onto the platform, the judges inquired how she felt, and she replied, “Scared.” Alice was noticeably anxious, telling interviewers that she’d had stage fright her entire life before taking the stage.

Many of Alice’s worries stemmed from her fear of the judges, believing that their rejection of her meant she wasn’t good enough. As her song began to play, the audience held their breath. The candidate selected to sing “My Funny Valentine,” a jazz standard that was previously Chet Baker’s signature song. During the introductory notes, the stadium became silent.
Alice began singing, “My funny valentine, Sweet comic valentine…” Her voice was slightly shaky. Notably, Simon Cowell’s head was lowered. Perhaps he did not want to make Alice nervous by looking at her. However, when Alice reached the line “You make me smile with my heart,” her volume soared and she touched unexpected notes. Simon raised his head and began to smile.

Alice moved her arms throughout the song, recalling Nina Simone’s performances. Simon and the other judges were impressed by her. Alice’s sensuous rendition of “My Funny Valentine” earned her a spot in the next round and a standing ovation from the audience and all four judges.
