In the words of Anita Diamant, “Birth is a pinnacle where women discover the courage to become mothers.” No mama could know the bravery required in this pinnacle moment better than Raelin Scurry, a woman whose one-in-a-million birth story is making headlines across the web.
At just 29 weeks pregnant, Raelin never expected that the contractions she was having were actually indicative of a baby on the WAY. But 45 minutes, one push and one adrenaline-rush-of-a-car-ride later, she witnessed a phenomenon that only one in 80,000 mothers gets to experience—a birth inside the amniotic sac.
But the new mom’s sense of awe quickly turned into sheer terror when she realized her beautiful baby was completely still. “I was so scared,” recalls Raelin as she desperately prayed for her 3-pound preemie to show a sign of life…and surely enough, her miracle baby did just that.
Raelin details her harrowing birth story in a viral Facebook post that is gripping the hearts of mothers everywhere:
“Our birth story!
The human body is truly an amazing thing. 8.5.2017 at about 10 AM I started having contractions. I was only 29 weeks and 4 days so I just figured they were Braxton hicks and decided to wait it out. After about 45 minutes of consistent contractions increasing in intensity I decided I should probably go in.
My Fiancé was so calm driving and on the phone with 911. The contractions got closer and more violent as time went on, and before I knew it, it was time to push. Because I was so terrified, I dialed 911. Between the screaming and contractions, they couldn’t understand me. So I gave my fiancé the phone. When I took down my jeans and reached down, his head was right there.
I only had to push once, and my miraculous baby was born. I noticed baby was still totally encased in the amniotic sac when I looked down. We were told to pull over by the dispatcher, but I knew we’d be to the hospital before they got to us. As a result, I told Ean to continue driving. I was terrified. My fiancé was very composed.
At first, the baby was still and all I could do was pray he would be okay. And then I rubbed his face with my thumb and he pulled his little hands and feet up to his face as if he understood my prayers and wanted to reassure us he was okay.
About 7 minutes passed that I held this miracle baby in my hands until we made it to the hospital. He was 3lb 1oz. He’s doing wonderful, all things considered with all he went through I know he’s going to be an awesome little man! He is truly a miracle baby. We are so blessed to be his parents.”
