‘Am I wrong for making my mother-in-law cry after telling her I didn’t want a gender reveal party?’

A pregnant woman described how her mother-in-law sobbed after she told her she didn’t want a gender reveal party. The expecting mother came to Reddit to explain that gender reveals make her ‘uncomfortable,’ but her husband’s mother insisted she throw one regardless. “My spouse and I are expecting our first child.”

We intend to go to my native country [after the baby is born] because the cost of having a baby there is significantly lower,” she wrote. She opted to involve her mother-in-law at all doctor’s visits, events, and milestones because she knew she would miss her son and granddaughter. When her mother-in-law asked when she planned to have a gender reveal party, she said she wasn’t sure!

“So I told her that it was very nice but that I’d rather not.” “We could just hold a bigger baby shower instead,” she suggested. Her mother-in-law brought up the idea again at a routine scan, but she declined. “We went to see the doctor.” My husband was away at work, so it was just my mother-in-law and me. I respond yes when the doctor asks if I want to know the gender of the baby.

My mother-in-law shushes me and says no. She says to put it in an envelope so we can give it to the person responsible for the gender reveal,” the mom-to-be continued. But when she rejected the idea, her mother-in-law got impatient and left the appointment in tears. Her MIL then called her husband saying that she had been horrible to her.

Her husband said that he was also not a fan of gender reveal parties but her mother was sad so they should just play along. People on Reddit were on the pregnant woman’s side, with most commenters saying it should be her decision, not her mother-in-law’s. One person wrote: “You absolutely deserve to have your wishes and boundaries respected.

I think your husband needs to explain to his mother that its his and your child, and you do actually get a say in what you wish to happen throughout your pregnancy.” Another said: “The doctor asked you if you wanted to know the sex of the baby. As the mother, that’s your bloody decision. Your mother-in-law can mind her own damn business.”
