Greed is certainly part of the human condition. Whether it shows up in small ways or large, we all know what it’s like to struggle with the sin of gluttony. Ultimately, however, you can’t take money with you when you die, so it’s better to use your finances for good while you’re here on earth. One man, however, didn’t understand this concept. He had an odd request at his funeral but luckily his wife was able to outsmart him in the end!

There’s no doubt this story is true, regardless of whether it’s true or not. It’s understandable that so many people were eager to spread this amusing and poignant tale; it seems as if we could use a gentle reminder that we cannot take our money with us when we die! Modern-day Scrooge is the subject of this short story. He worked hard all his life and never spent more than he had to in order to stay alive!

He meticulously counted every penny in order to increase his savings. For him, money was more important than anything else in the world. He even expressed this desire to wife, saying that he would rather be buried with it than anything else. In the final moments of his life, he told his wife, “Listen up! Before I’m buried, please place all of my hard-earned cash in the casket with me. I want to take my money with me in the afterlife, no matter where I end up. ”

In her heart, she wanted to honor her husband’s wishes because she was a kindhearted woman. It’s safe to assume that hearing her husband’s most self-centered request upset her. That didn’t deter the man from bribing his wife with promises of financial security. When the woman’s husband passed away, it was a difficult decision to carry out his wishes.

Because she had to live on a fixed income, it was even more difficult for her to accept the fact that her husband was so selfish. She could have used his money to better her situation and the lives of those who were close to her. Nevertheless, the promise she had made to her husband was a heavy weight on her mind. This wise woman devised an ingenious scheme to ensure that everyone was content. It was the day of the funeral, and the woman was seated in the front row, her best friend by her side, comforting her.

At the end of the ceremony, the widow, dressed in black stood and said, “Wait a minute!” Now came the moment of truth. Would she obey her husband’s wishes? Her best friend watched in disbelief as the widow carried out her promise. The woman knew she couldn’t live with the guilt of breaking the promise to her husband. She clutched a shoebox tightly in her hands and finally placed it in the casket with her husband’s body right before it was taken away.

Her friend had seen enough and needed to know what decision was made. She said to the woman, “I hope didn’t put any money in there with that selfish man!” The loyal widow smiled and responded, “Yes, I promised him I would. I’m a good Christian and I cannot tell a lie. I promised him that I would put that money in that casket with him.”

Horrified, the friend asked, “You actually put every cent of his money in the casket with him?” “I sure did,” answered the widow. “I got it all together, put it into my account, and I wrote him a check.” Share this story if you got a good laugh!
