Every parent hopes and prays that their children are always secure and protected. Even the most careful parents may find themselves in heart-stopping situations when it comes to their children’s wellbeing. Read the whole fantastic tale and share it with all of your loved ones. I’ve been putting off writing this article. First, because of the inevitable internet mom-shaming that will follow, and second, because it’s simply incredibly difficult to relive.
Our washing machine went down on Sunday. My husband went to Lowe’s on Monday and bought this new front load washing machine. We assumed it was the “new and cool” sort of washing machine and paid no attention to it. We spent the evening installing it while the kids were around. We had instructed them countless times not to touch it. “OK,” they all said. Our four-year-old son woke us up early Tuesday morning, weeping so hard he couldn’t speak…
My husband sprang out of bed and down the stairs as I struggled to grasp what he was saying. The epiphany came at that point. Kloe, he’d said. Inside. Washer. My three-year-old daughter Kloe was LOCKED inside the airtight washing machine by the time we arrived to the basement laundry room. It was rolling about and filled up with water. You couldn’t hear her because she was yelling. We were able to stop it fast, open the door, and get her out. She was alright, save for a couple of little bruises on her head and damp clothing.
After considering all of the “what ifs” and “might haves,” we realize we are incredibly fortunate and that God had compassion on our lovely daughter. I’m posting this because I honestly believe we underestimated the threat of this equipment. We are always astounded by the novel and innovative ways our children attempt to die. And this was absolutely a first. I took this photo after we used a kid safety lock to close the door.
We also discovered a kid lock function in the settings that, when used, prevents the washing machine from starting. However, it does not lock the door. We hadn’t even used the machine yet, so we hadn’t even looked at the settings. Also, it clearly took two inquisitive children to pull this off. I want to advise everyone who has this sort of front loading washing machine with little children, or even grandchildren that visit, to use a child safety lock and keep the child lock setting on at all times!
I recognize there were things we could have done to avoid this. This is the season for swimming pool mishaps, children being left in hot automobiles, and other heinous mishaps. And the most of them are. Accidents. Shaming the mother serves no use. To keep our children safe, we must be upfront and honest about our faults. And believe me, that mum is already berating herself.
