A court in Argentina has ordered a man to pay his ex-wife $179,000 in restitution after she had to give up her profession for over three decades to raise their children and conduct home duties. According to KVUE, the verdict, which was the first in the nation, ordered the former husband to pay his former wife for all of the time and effort she put into concentrating on their marriage over their 27-year marriage.
It’s also because the previous wife, who is now 70 years old, gave up her work to support their marriage and children. After the marriage split in 2011, the lady suffered financially since she had no means of her own income after being a housewife for 27 years. The lady was left to struggle on her own while her ex-husband had no financial troubles.
The pair married in 1982 before divorcing in 2009. Their divorce was completed in 2011, but the lady had struggled to support herself.
According to Clarin Sociedad, the lady has a degree in economics. When they married, she had to give up her job ambitions in order to concentrate on domestic responsibilities and raising their children. According to the judgement, since women are primarily financially reliant on their husbands, they have been “subordinated to society.” “In most homes, women continue to bear the majority of the burden of domestic duties and child care, even when they engage in some external work,” the judgement read.
Keeping a job at 70 years old would be practically hard for the ex wife. Following the woman’s financial difficulties, the court subsequently ordered the ex spouse to pay 8 million pesos (USD $179,000) in compensation as of Tuesday afternoon. According to reports, the sum was “appropriate to re-balance the different economic condition of the spouses as a consequence of the marriage and its divorce.”
