The COVID-19 pandemic affected everyone in some way. And, while we hope those difficult times are behind us, we will never forget how devastating the last few years have been for the majority of us. Many businesses were forced to close, causing many people to lose their jobs and end up on the streets. And, as we all praised doctors and medical workers for their work against the virus, residents of a Virginia neighborhood remembered to express their gratitude to another vital profession during the pandemic, the UPS driver,
who always made sure to deliver their goods on time while they stayed at home and protected themselves. Workers at the US Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS helped keep America’s economy afloat, though few acknowledged their dedication and sacrifice during difficult times for humanity. Anthony Gaskin, a UPS driver, was on his regular route when he noticed something out of the ordinary. Several cars were parked along the road.
He had no idea what was going on until he noticed two children holding signs that read, “Hallsley loves you, Anthony.” The rest of the crowd cheered and waved, and Anthony realized they had done all of this for him. These people believed Anthony deserved to be recognized for all he had done for them during the pandemic. “Even though his truck lacks sirens and his uniform provides no additional fire protection, Anthony Gaskins is regarded as a hero in the Hallsley neighborhood,” Patty Friedman later told WTVR in an email.
“Through COVID, Anthony has continued to work, delivering packages at our doors in record numbers, over 180 times to date. “I wanted to personally thank him for how much he made me feel welcome when I moved in during a pandemic,” she added. “It was awfully lonely, and he was always the high point of my day.” Needless to say, Anthony was moved to tears and grateful for the recognition.
“Hundreds of Hallsley residents lined the road, arriving on bikes, on foot, and in more than 75 cars, waiting for Anthony to turn the corner,” Patty told WTVR. “A humble man, he needed to be coaxed, but eventually, slowly drove his truck down the road while children and adults held up signs, screamed his name, honked their horns, and rang bells. Gaskins’ bosses even showed up to give him a present.”
We believe that this is a well-deserved gesture in recognition of everything Anthony and his colleagues do for their communities. More information can be found in the video below.
