When you’re in a difficult situation, it’s critical to keep a clear head so you can think of ways to survive. Jerry Jouret, 81, is a former NASA employee who was stranded in his car for a week after getting caught in a snowstorm on a long drive. Jerry was driving from Big Pine, California to Gardnerville, Nevada on February 24th when his SUV became stuck during a bad snowstorm on a desolate California highway.
It was supposed to be a four-hour drive, but it took him seven days and a medical helicopter to complete. Jerry checked the weather before leaving the house and thought he could beat the approaching snowstorm, but he was wrong. He got his car stuck on the road, and that’s when the blizzard hit. Jerry conserved his car’s battery and fuel for seven days by only using it for heating for short periods of time and kept himself warm with a windbreaker, quilt, and bath towel.
He divided the snacks he had in the SUV, which included croissants, candy, and biscotti, so they would last a few days. Jerry would then open the window to get some ice as a water source, and this is how he survived until help arrived. When the snowstorm passed, a chopper searched the area and initially mistook Jerry’s SUV for a large rock, but when they circled back, they saw Jerry waving his hand out the car window.
Jerry was taken to the hospital by rescuers after they extracted him from his SUV. He was released a few hours later after no injuries or signs of hypothermia were discovered. In the video below, Jerry describes how he survived a week inside his car in the middle of a snowstorm.
