US Coins’ New Female Honorees

The US $.25 coin has changed a lot in recent years. The quarters honor various people and feature a symbol from every state. Few know about the American Women Quarters Program. That program celebrates American women from the past and present. The 2024 American Woman Quarters will include more American women. The coin will feature a singer, Civil War surgeon, Congresswoman, and political activist.

“All of the women being honored have lived remarkable and multi-faceted lives, and have made a significant impact on our Nation in their own unique way,” said US mint director Ventris C. Gibson in a press release.He said honoring them will keep America connected through the “small works of art” in their pockets because they were pioneers.

The 2024 American Woman Quarters will honor Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color in Congress. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War Union Army surgeon, and civil rights activist and poet Pauli Murray will also be featured. Zitkala-Ša, a Yankton Dakota Sioux, will also appear. She later campaigned for indigenous Americans. Finally, Celia Cruz will perform. She popularized salsa.

Bessie Coleman quarters circulated during Black History Month. First black woman to pilot.“Her tenacious drive and fearless personality helped pave the way for future generations of aviators and for women,” Gibson said of Coleman in a press release. The 2024 American Women Quarters can be found in circulation or ordered from the US mint’s website by 2025. Past quarter sets are also available.
