Sending Prayers For Carol Burnett

Carol Burnett will celebrate her 90th birthday later this month with a celebration. While Burnett’s nine decades were filled with professional accomplishments, they were also marked by sadness, most notably the 2002 death of her daughter Carrie Hamilton, one of three daughters she had with her second husband, Joe Hamilton.”There’s not a day or almost a moment that goes by that she’s not with me,” Burnett tells PEOPLE. “We collaborated, we laughed together, and we cried together.” She was a force to be reckoned with.”

Hamilton followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming an actress. She starred as Reggie Higgins in the TV series Fame, and she also acted in the films Tokyo Pop and Shag.Burnett and Hamilton collaborated on multiple projects, including a Carol & Company episode in 1990 and the play Hollywood Arms, which was based on Burnett’s book. Hamilton has battled both drug addiction and lung and brain cancer since her diagnosis in 2002.

She died in January of that year, at the age of 38.”When she got sick, I remember she was in the hospital and I would go to see her every day,” Burnett remembers. “A nurse at the hospital once stated, ‘Carrie brightens us up.’ When I asked Carrie why she was always upbeat, she said, ‘Everyday I wake up and decide.’ Decide is the crucial word.” As Burnett puts it now, “I say that to myself every morning.””It’s taking [it] one day at a time,” Burnett explains. “You have no idea. Life may change in an instant. So simply be thankful for what you have today.”
