Mary Johnson, a state lawmaker in North Dakota, was more concerned with keeping the city of Fargo running properly than with her attractiveness. Wanting her physical appearance to reflect her accomplishments, the woman rose from her position with the state and sat in the chair of Christopher Hopkins, the Makeover Guy known for his miraculous changes.

With a dramatic makeover, Johnson transformed from “basic Mary Johnson from Fargo” to “that girl,” leaving her husband speechless. Mary Johnson (then 60) of North Dakota left her governmental job to work in Christopher Hopkins’ salon in 2019. The brilliant stylist, who wrote “Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45,” was prepared for Johnson, a former member of the North Dakota House of Representatives.

The woman, who sat on the standing committee until 2022, desired a new style that reflected her professional and personal ambitions. She also planned to surprise David, her husband, who was later taken aback by her big announcement! “No purple, no blue, none of that,” she said as she sat in Hopkins’ chair at the salon. Hopkins added a little red, combining her natural gray with blonde highlights to bring out her brilliant eyes, along with shortening her hair into a style that wonderfully frames her freckled face.

While filming the change, another of Hopkins’ clients approaches by off-screen and remarks that Johnson looks about 42. Johnson, beaming with joy, adds 42 was roughly “20 years ago.”She then goes to the room where David is impatiently awaiting his wonderful bride. He’d have to recognize her. He didn’t do it! As Mary approaches, his mouth drops to the ground and he exclaims, “WOW,” later admitting that he mistook her for another woman.
