Seeing the name at the top of an old recipe card might sometimes be enough to get me enthused about making it. That is precisely the case in Moose on the Loose. It was something I’d never heard of or found any information on, which made the culinary adventure all the more thrilling. It turns out to be a no-bake treat with a lot going on, similar to a Rice Krispy Treat but on steroids. And it’s really good.
This card came to me as part of the Recipe Tin Project, which involves cooking my way through an antique recipe tin filled with vintage recipes. But you may have already guessed that. It’s packed of old recipe cards, the majority of which appear to be from the 1960s and 1970s, though some are earlier. I adore food history, and the goal is to give these old recipes new life while also learning a trick or two along the way.
The recipes are from various persons with varying handwriting; some include lovely pictures, while others are on plain (sometimes dirty and discolored) index cards. This one is on a 3×5-inch index card made from plain paper. It states “Loraine” at the top in black ink, while the remainder is written in wonderful bright blue cursive.
The ingredients are detailed, and the instructions are straightforward – so this one was simple! (This cannot be stated of all the recipe cards. Some don’t have any instructions! To begin, melt peanut butter and “candy quick” in a skillet over low heat. Candy fast or almond bark is a vanilla-flavored candy coating. Either will do.
The recipe stated for half a cup of peanut butter, but I misinterpreted it and used a full cup. Everything went out quite great, even though it was a touch more peanutty! After things have melted together, mix in two cups of Rice Krispies cereal, peanut butter Cap’n Crunch cereal, and micro marshmallows. It’s a lot. Stir carefully. But eventually, all of those things will be wrapped in peanut butter candy bliss.
Then, drop them by the spoonful onto waxed paper and let them sit until hardened. They’re a tiny little delicacy that melts onto your hands, which isn’t so bad because you get to lick it off afterward. The coating has a creamy, slight peanut butter flavor, which is excellent. They have the same sensation as a Rice Krispy Treat, but with less marshmallow pull and a lot more crunch. They’re fantastic!
