Billie Eilish, a musician, and her brother, Finneas, a producer, attended the 2024 Oscars last night. Many people had no idea what the pin on the garments of actors Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, Ramy Youssef, and Quannah Chasinghorse represented.

The pin was later seen on actor Mahershala Ali, who did not walk the red carpet but instead appeared on stage to greet this year’s Best Supporting Actor nominees. Many people were perplexed as to what the pin represented because none of these celebrities had previously collaborated on the same project. The pin was spherical and crimson. Health officials in the Gaza Strip report that more than 30,000 Palestinians have died since Israel’s assault began on October 7. Many of those killed in Israel’s bombardment were youngsters, as over half of Gaza’s population is under the age of 18. People are demanding for a ceasefire in the area more than ever, as the massacre of Palestinian civilians enters its sixth month. Many artists, not only from Hollywood, have joined the plea for peace. Artists4Ceasefire rallied almost 400 celebrities to support the cause.

At the end of October, the campaign issued a letter urging President Joe Biden and the US Congress to immediately cease the conflict in Israel and Gaza. However, unlike pins supporting causes like the Time’s Up campaign in 2018, which were worn by practically every celebrity on the red carpet, just a few celebrities sported pins calling for peace at the 2024 Oscars. At the Grammys earlier this year, only Boygenius and Annie Lennox were seen sporting the same pins. Lennox made a point of requesting peace on stage.

Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud, who starred in the film Anatomy of a Fall, were spotted wearing Palestinian flag pins on the red carpet.Ramy Youssef, an actor and comedian who co-starred in “Poor Things” with Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, was disappointed that the appeal for a truce and the end of the conflict in Gaza was not being pursued.

“There’s no other route,” Youssef remarked in an interview, pointing to the cease-fire request. “It’s taking too long…” That is what we are all urging everyone to speak up about. Stars such as Cate Blanchett, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, and America Ferrera have signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter.
