This onion “cake” contains some sweetness due to the caramelized onions on top and a small amount of sugar in the batter, similar to the slight sweetness of cornbread. However, this rich, cake-like bread is very moist thanks to whole milk, sour cream, and the addition of 5 eggs to the batter.

This delectable bread-cake is additionally flavored with paprika, poppy seeds, and a generous amount of black pepper. To make this bread, first caramelize 3 to 4 Vidalia onions in 1/2 cup butter for 10 minutes. All bulb onions contain sugar, but Vidalia are the sweetest, so stick with this kind for optimum results.
