This grandmother’s story serves as a compelling reminder that if your instinct tells you something is wrong, you should heed to it. Mabel Berald is a lovely grandmother who has dealt with fraudsters twice and was able to do it willingly. One morning, she received an uncomfortable phone call that no grandmother would want to get.
The mysterious caller informed her that her 16-year-old grandson, Mitchell, had been arrested by police with illegal narcotics in his automobile. The caller informed her that she needed to provide $88,000 for Mitchell’s release. Instead of panicking, Mabel asked the caller for her grandson’s surname. When the fraudster realized Mabel was on to him, he quickly hung up.
Mabel immediately called Mitchell to ensure he was safe at home. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time she had to deal with this. Previously, she received a call requesting that she withdraw $7,500 owing to an incident involving her grandson. A cab was dispatched to transport her to her bank. She suspected something was awry when she inquired about the fare.
She stated, “I’m not sure what made me think about it, but I asked the cab driver, ‘Who’s paying for this cab?’ and he said, ‘I was.'” I answered, ‘Oh no, I’m not. I am not paying for you. I did not call for you.” Although no one likes to be put in these situations, especially more than once, Mabel’s experience demonstrates why we must always be cautious and apply common sense before jumping to conclusions that could cause significant harm.
