Nowadays, most people meet their significant other through a dating app, but it wasn’t so long ago that finding your soulmate required going out into the actual world. Yes, even celebrities had to labor hard to pursue their one true love. Just ask Maureen McCormick, 67, who initially saw her future husband at a concert before winning him over at church.
Maureen McCormick is well remembered for her role as Marcia on The Brady Bunch, which aired from 1969 until 1974. After the show ended, McCormick, who was born on August 5, 1956, participated in various Brady Bunch spin-offs. Despite her success on The Brady Bunch, she struggled the hardest in her personal life in the years following its closure. McCormick’s credibility as an actress diminished as a result of her drug addictions, depressive episodes, and bulimia.
“I’ve been through a lot of hard times, but I take all those experiences and learn and grow from them,” she stated to People in 2016. “I received treatment in a psych ward, entered and exited rehab, and prayed to God for guidance.”As the former child actress fought a cocaine addiction and struggled to accept that the acting career she had dreamed of was not going as planned, she met a man at a concert who would become her husband.
“I turned around and saw this guy behind me,” McCormick wrote in her memoir, Here’s the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Discovering My True Voice. “I had never seen him before. He had dark hair, a strong physique, and sculpted features. I stared directly into his eyes and thought, ‘This is the man I’m going to marry.'” McCormick went to work and started attending the same Bible studies as Cummings.
She even sat close him in church. The former Brady wants to know everything about Cummings. And it worked! After spending more time with him, they went on their first date, and the rest is history. “She was really honest with me from the beginning. She has always been honest with me, like an open book. And I was never concerned about her relapsing to her previous behavior because I felt whatever came up, we’d deal with it,” Cummings told the Daily Mail in 2015.
Although McCormick described their romance as “quick and passionate,” it wasn’t always easy going. McCormick continued to battle her drug addiction and sobriety, always pushing Cummings away. But he never left. “Michael said that he’d made a life-long commitment and decided he was going to work at it until it’s unworkable,” she said in her 2008 book. “He thought child stardom had arrested my development, and in many ways he was right.”
Despite the ups and downs, the couple, who welcomed a kid in 1989, will celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary on March 16. “I know there’s one reason that Michael and I managed to stay together through all the heavy-duty ups and downs: our faith,” wrote McCormick. “Despite our issues, the two of us believed that our love was genuine, strong, long-lasting, and worthwhile. Our faith convinced us that our love was true.”
