Cowboy Cornbread Trifle

Giddyup! Yee-haw! And, hooray! We have a side dish that will make everyone want to sit down for a meal. We enjoy creating food that is both delicious and visually appealing. We combined a favorite dessert and a favorite dip to create one delicious and visually appealing side dish. A trifle is a layered dessert that includes cake, fruit, and cream. It’s served in a clear bowl or serving dish, allowing the “audience” to see each layer – and it looks stunning.

We took the notion of this sweet dessert and transformed it into a savory side dish that is equally beautiful and delicious. Layering always helps a dish look a little better; even something as simple as a 7-layer dip looks fantastic due to the various tiers of color. Layer cakes, parfaits, and trifles all have a layered appearance that gives them a little more elegance than their simple components might suggest.

Our cowboy trifle combines the basics of a trifle but substitutes cornbread for cake, a salsa blend for fruit, and a cool creamy dip for sweet cream. We create each layer in the same way that we would for a dessert trifle, and it’s also helpful to have a clear bowl so that the crowd can see each wonderful layer. We love how fanciful this looks, and we also love how delicious it tastes.

As happy as we were to show off our cowboy trifle, we couldn’t wait to dig down and savor every layer of sweetness. It’s enjoyable to “play” with food and give a recipe new life by experimenting with new variants on familiar ingredients. And we adore the name “cowboy trifle” because it sounds both fun and quirky. However, this recipe is not to be taken lightly. When this is displayed on the table, it is sure to elicit some oohs, ahhs, and yee-haws!
