Amish Onion Fritters

Are you a lover of onion rings? Then, oh boy, do I have a fried onion snackable side dish you’ll enjoy that you’ve probably never heard of: Amish Onion Fritters. Consider an onion ring — that delightful sweet bite of onion with a crisp fried outside — but also image a tender cozy doughiness bringing it all together. That is an Amish Onion Fritter, and I would not be shocked if it became your new favorite thing.

I don’t fry much at home, but fritters can be shallow fried without the need for special equipment, an extremely deep pan, or a lot of oil. (Because, let’s be honest, deep frying is a bother. (And a mess.) These are manageable while still providing that cozy typical deep-fried crunch. First, you’ll need two cups of chopped onion, which is approximately one medium onion.

Then, in a separate bowl, combine that with some milk, flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and a pinch of sugar. It’s a quick and effective batter. The cornmeal adds texture and taste, while baking powder keeps things light.Drop the batter by the spoonful into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, which should take only a few minutes. It helps to flatten the fritter with a fork shortly after you drop the batter in to make it easier to bite into. Enjoy!
