With the way my shopping expenses are increasing, I’m more aware of my food waste than ever. I’ve discovered new ways to turn the remains of my jam and peanut butter into delicious sauces, I’m creating my own chicken and vegetable broth, and I’ve discovered the ideal solution for sandwich crusts! Yes, it would be great if children ate the entire sandwich, crust and all, but finicky eaters cannot always be persuaded. And with these simple Sandwich Crust Garlic Rolls, the crust is no longer going to waste. A win for all!
For the crusts, I’ve found that starting with a large ziplock bag or sealable container works best. Store it in the refrigerator and let it pile up until you have approximately a sandwich loaf’s worth. Roll the crusts into spiral shapes that fit snugly into the bottom of a greased muffin tray. To keep them together and in form, gently press them down with the bottom of a cup or the back of a spoon.
Then comes the most vital part: garlic! A simple blend of butter, garlic, herbs, and cheese transforms these plain crusts into a tasty side dish. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until they start to turn golden. Serve them alongside your favorite pasta dish or as a light afternoon snack. You may tell the kids they’re eating sandwich crusts or not!
