It seems that visitors have a belief that the place is haunted, which is not surprising given its extensive history! This charming house is nestled along the scenic Highway 55 in the picturesque town of Estancia, New Mexico. However, please note that it is not open to the public for visits. Estancia Board of Trustees member and former Estancia Mayor Morrow Hall shares insights about the house. “It’s been left untouched for about two decades,” he remarks.

According to the locals, there have been some eerie theories circulating about the house and its current occupants. Adding to its eerie atmosphere, the building lacks a door, attracting locals who frequently stop by to snap a photo in the hopes of capturing something supernatural. Raul Zubia from Estancia claims that occasionally, when passing by, one may catch a glimpse of apparitions lingering in the window.

This 1920s Sears catalog house is a popular destination for those seeking a spooky experience. According to local residents, there is a sense of fear when individuals attempt to trespass on the property in the vicinity. According to them, they frequently have to “politely ask people to leave” in such situations. Michelle Jones from Estancia describes it as a “ghost house.” According to her, this is a popular choice during this season, especially for Halloween.

According to Hall, lawyer Fred Ayers purchased the house as a kit in the 1920s from the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog. According to the Sears Archives, the house managed to sell an impressive number of over 70,000 build-it-yourself house kits. There were nearly 450 different housing styles available from 1908 to 1940.This home has truly stood the test of time. Not only do curious individuals attempt to trespass, but the locals are more than willing to share a century’s worth of captivating history about the house. “It resembles the current state of Sears and Roebuck,” Hall comments.

The ownership of the house still lies with the Ayers family. On the surrounding land, they are currently engaged in raising livestock. Hall also mentions that the Estancia United Methodist Church was constructed using a DIY home kit in the early 1900s! This house in Estancia, New Mexico holds a significant part of Sears company’s history, ensuring its legacy for years to come.
