My mother was locked up in a closet during my wedding ceremony—we were shocked to discover who did it to her and why.

Everything was beautiful during my wedding until I realized my mother was gone. Moments later, she stormed in, disheveled and enraged, waving a shaking finger. We were shocked to find that someone close to her had locked her in a closet for reasons we could never have imagined. My entire family was bustling with anticipation for my wedding to Fabian, my longtime boyfriend. But the person on cloud nine was my mother, Adele.

As an only child, I was always close to both of my parents, but Mom and I had a particular connection. She’d been dreaming of this day for years…We had spent many hours preparing every aspect together. Choosing our clothing felt like a fashion show, tasting cake became a sugar-fueled experience, and selecting the song for the Father-Daughter dance left us both in tears.

“Oh, Bella,” Mom exclaimed, wiping away tears as I tried on the bridal gown. “I can’t believe my little girl is all grown up and getting married.” I hugged her tightly. “I’ll always be your little girl, Mom.”On the big day, everything seemed to go well. I stood in the back of the church, my heart racing as Dad grasped my arm. “Ready, sweetheart?” he inquired, his voice heavy with love.

I nodded, too choked up to talk. The doors swung open, and we began walking down the aisle. I met eyes with Fabian, whose smile was as dazzling as the sun. But, as we approached the altar, my stomach sank. Something was wrong. I searched the sea of faces, panic swelling in my chest. MOM WASN’T PRESENT.”Dad,” I said anxiously, “where’s Mom?”

He furrowed his brow as he peered about. “I… I do not know. “I thought she was here. I came to a complete stop, the music screeching to a standstill. All eyes turned to me. “We can’t start,” I murmured, my voice cracking. “Mom’s missing.”Fabian came to my side, his face etched with concern. “Bella, what’s wrong?” “My mom,” I cried out. “She isn’t here.” “We need to find her.”

I turned to face my brothers in the front row. “Could you guys look for her?” Please?” They nodded, jumped up, and rushed out of the chapel. Fabian squeezed my hand. “I’m certain she’s alright. Probably just got caught up somewhere.” But as the minutes passed, fear settled in my stomach. This was not like Mom at all. She wouldn’t miss my wedding for anything.

Guests shifted uncomfortable and spoke among themselves. I marched back and forth, my bridal gown swishing with every step. “Maybe we should call the police,” I murmured, wringing my hands.Fabian placed his arm around me. Let’s give your father and brothers a bit more time. I’m confident they will find her.” But as an hour passed, I felt anything but confident. The chapel was packed with hushed talks and anxious expressions.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” I said to Fabian. “What if something terrible happened to her?” He pushed me closer. “Don’t think like that. We will find her, I promise.”Just as I was about to insist on contacting the cops, the church doors sprang open. Mom stumbled inside, followed by Dad and my brothers. Her neatly groomed hair was a tangle, her makeup smudged, and her golden gown crumpled.

“Mom!” I shouted and rushed towards her. “What happened?” “Where were you?” But before she could respond, her gaze fixed on someone in the front row. Her expression distorted with wrath. “YOU!” she yelled, pointing her shaking finger.I followed her eyes, surprised to discover my future mother-in-law, Grace, cowering in her seat. “Mom, what’s going on?” I inquired, my heart thumping.

She turned to face me, her eyes burning. “Your mother-in-law locked me inside the closet! Can you believe it? “Only because I wore an expensive golden dress.” The chapel erupted with surprised gasps and furious muttering. I felt like I was in a weird dream. “What? “That’s crazy,” I said, gazing between Mom and Grace. Grace bolted up, her face blanched. “This is ridiculous!” “I would never—”

“Oh, save it!” Mom snapped and rolled her eyes. “I overheard you tell your sister that you had to be the only one wearing gold! This isn’t the first time you’ve been envious, but it’s the first time you’ve acted so badly as a result of it.” Fabian stepped forward with his jaw clinched. “Is this true, Mom?” Did you lock Mrs. Jacobs inside the closet?” Grace’s composure crumbled. She wrung her hands, and her voice was shaky. “I just… I thought… she was trying to outshine me!”

Fabian’s face clouded with wrath. “Mom, today is Bella’s wedding day, not yours!” How could you be so petty and cruel? You should depart. Now.” “But…” Grace began, “I just made a minor error! I couldn’t stand seeing her attract so much attention in that dress.” “No buts,” Fabian hissed. “You’ve spoiled enough of the day. Leave.”Grace screwed her features into a grimace. “Fine! You’re going to regret this!” She grabbed her bag and walked out, leaving a startled hush in her wake.

For a minute, no one moved. Then dad cleared his throat. “Okay, everyone. Let’s get back to celebrating this lovely couple!” Slowly, the stress subsided. Fabian looked at me, his eyes filled with regret. “I’m so sorry, Bella.” I had no idea my mother would do something as horrible as this.” I gripped his hand. “This is not your fault. Let’s just concentrate on ourselves now, okay?”

He nodded, a little smile returning to his lips. “I love you.” “I love you, too,” I said quietly. As we resumed our positions at the altar, I drew Mom’s attention. She gave me a comforting nod, and relief washed over me. We were going to get through it. The ceremony resumed, and despite the preceding drama, I felt a rush of happiness as Fabian and I exchanged our vows. When the priest declared us husband and wife, the church erupted in cheers.

As we walked back down the aisle as husband and wife, I leaned in close to Fabian. “Well, that wasn’t quite how I imagined our wedding going.” He chuckled gently. “Me, neither. But, hey, at least it will be a memorable wedding, right?” I couldn’t help laughing. “That’s one way to look at it.”The reception was in full swing, with the earlier pandemonium almost forgotten as attendees danced and joked. I found myself beside the punch bowl, finally able to breathe.

“Some wedding, huh?” a voice near me asked. I turned to see Aunt Wima shaking her head. “I cannot believe Grace did that. What a nightmare for a mother-in-law.” “I know,” I sighed. “It’s still hard to process.” Another guest joined in. “I am delighted Fabian stood up to her. demonstrates what kind of man he is.” I smiled when I spotted Fabian across the room. He caught my eye and winked, sending my heart racing.

“Speaking of nightmares,” Aunt Wilma added, “where is your mother? “The poor thing must be traumatized.” I looked around the room, realizing I hadn’t seen her in a while. “I should go check on her.” I discovered Mom sitting alone on a garden bench, gazing at the sky. As I approached, she glanced up at me with a sorrowful grin. “Hey, sweetheart,” she murmured quietly.

I sat down next her and took her hand. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that, Mom.” She pressed my fingertips. “It’s okay, sweetheart. The most important thing is that you are happy and married to a lovely man. Tears prickled in my eyes. “But it’s not right. This was meant to be perfect; instead…” “Hey,” Mom replied, turning to face me. “Life is not perfect, Bella. However, it is how we deal with defects that is important. And you? “You handled today beautifully.”

I leaned my head against her shoulder, feeling like a small girl again. “I love you, Mom.” “I love you too, sweetie,” she said softly, kissing the top of my head.We sat in comfortable silence for a few moments before she spoke again. “That’s enough moping. It is your wedding day! “Let’s go dance.” Back inside, the celebration was in full swing. Fabian whisked me into the dance floor, bringing me close.

“Everything okay?” he said, his eyes filled with concern. I nodded and smiled up at him. “It’s better than okay. “I was just thinking about how lucky I am.”His brow wrinkled. “Lucky? “After everything that happened today?” “Absolutely,” I replied firmly. “Because at the end of it all, I am married to you. And that is all that matters. Fabian’s expression softened, and his eyes shone with adoration. “I swear, Bella, that I will always defend you and be at your side. “No matter what.” I reached out and touched his cheek. “I understand. And that is why I love you.”
