How to alter a wall and a room with inexpensive wood lath! Product links may be affiliate links at no additional cost to you, but your purchase allows me to help you with more wonderful projects! Yes, I cannot leave well enough alone. Good enough is never sufficient for me. Take a look at our guest bathroom… so so. It never seemed finished or correct. Suddenly, I had a brilliant wall concept, but all of my materials were prohibitively pricey.
Don’t worry, though. That implies it’s time to be inventive. Enter wood lath. So for about $40, I altered a space like crazy. If you’re concerned about the wood, this bathroom has only been used for a shower six times and will not be used again for years, therefore the lath will be fine. But hey, this idea works for any room in the house!

Sure, lath is tricky. It’s crooked, bent, and inconsistent. It is also rough and tumble. But! It saves money and looks nice without wandering into design styles I didn’t want to use. Here is what I used: bundles of wood lath (two of fifty, plus a few loose extras for this specific wall) Quart of Golden Mahogany StainGolden Mahogany stain and paint thinner․
Required tools: 1″ brad nails, brad nailer, nail gun, and hand saw. First, I dyed it with a mixture of Golden Mahogany and paint thinner. Check out my blog, Flipping the Flip, for a great story about my unprepared husband’s reaction to this wall. Next, attach it to the wall. I did not plan the vertical seams, but I did specify an eighth of an inch between each horizontal seam. What’s the simplest, most consistent way to obtain it? a free paint stirrer.
I have a lot of fantastic suggestions for this project, such as how I got around the outlet and the light fixture, so check out the post! It need a lot of cutting, to say the least. If you don’t have a pneumatic nailer, borrow one from a friend or rent one from the hardware store. So there it is! Certainly a high-end look on a budget!
