Owning a property always comes with the risk of unforeseen repairs, particularly those that may drain your savings. When an unknowing homeowner discovered a hole in his driveway, he had no idea it would lead to the discovery of an intriguing piece of history. His intended plan was to fill it up, but what he discovered was a subterranean WWII air raid shelter.

Simon Marks’ return home in 2016 was met with astonishment. After a difficult day, he was confronted with what appeared to be just another annoyance: his car getting stuck and the startling sound of cracking. Assuming it was a flower bed, he went outside to investigate, only to discover that his driveway had split and was collapsing in. This clearly explained the disturbing sound.Simon, intrigued, began removing the rubble.
To his surprise, he discovered something metallic embedded in the ground. It was too stubbornly stuck to extract on his own, so he called on his father. They disclosed a metal door, which when opened revealed a ladder beckoning them downhill. Indeed, Simon’s driveway led to a secret air raid shelter beneath his house.”I was just terrified the whole house was going to vanish,” Simon remembered.

“I took some pictures and sent them to my dad,” he recounted. “I discovered a ladder after moving a few stones. I took my selfie stick and stuck it down the hole where I saw two chambers.” His father immediately recognized it as an air raid bunker. Simon realized that there were other such shelters in their vicinity after conducting additional study. The origins of these air raid shelters can be traced back to Sir John Anderson, who is credited with their development.
Simon and his father eagerly examined the excavation’s rooms, but the majority were tragically bricked over. “One of the walls has been bricked up,” Simon stated. “I’m 90% certain we won’t locate any more rooms, but who knows. This could have been done during the construction of the house to help with the foundations. If that’s the case, we’ll have to leave it alone.

The father-son team hopes to restore this underground refuge. Rather than seal it off to prevent more harm, they regard it as a historical treasure worth preserving. “The previous owner was probably aware of the situation. Simon thought that he could have filled it in while building the house and laying the garden. “That was his choice, but it went unnoticed until now. I believe everything is amazing. I intend to empty and maintain it, providing it is still structurally sound. It’s incredible—all handmade—an crucial element of our past that deserves to be preserved.”
