A one-of-a-kind home builder who has made remarkable tiny homes in numerous locales discovered a plot of land in Hawaii and built an extraordinary treehouse on a microbudget. Kristie Wolfe has reinvented what it means to build a house. Since 2014, she has dedicated her time to constructing one-of-a-kind Airbnb properties, creating spaces that are both inventive and inviting.
Her notable projects include a hobbit hole in Washington, a rebuilt fire lookout in Idaho, a six-ton potato-turned-hotel in Boise, and a shipwreck-inspired house in Salmon, Idaho.”My goal is to create spaces where people can disconnect from the world and reconnect with themselves,” Kristie, the unconventional home builder, explains. The toilet’s bamboo faucet saves water by refilling the tank with sink runoff. The shower has slatted windows that may be opened to let in the rain, creating the sense of being immersed in nature.The creative home builder tiled the shower with tundra cork bark to add a tree-like touch to the interior. Despite not being intended for moist regions, the material has held up well, requiring just minor repairs.
“The oversized showerhead makes you feel like you’re showering in the rain,” she explains.A passion for sharing interesting settings. Kristie’s inspiration stems from her modest beginnings and passion to share her crafts. “Owning a house in a faraway place that just sits empty doesn’t appeal to me,” she says. “I love that I can share these experiences with people from all over the world.”
While each of her constructions is unique, Kristie refuses to choose a favorite. “Whichever one I’m at always feels like my favorite,” she adds, smiling. “But they all have something special about them.” Looking ahead, she intends to keep constructing for as long as it gives her pleasure. “Right now, it’s incredibly fulfilling,” Kristie says. “As long as it stays fun, I’ll keep creating.”
