On January 29, 2025, a midair collision over the Potomac River caused a tragic plane crash near Washington, D.C. Search crews are working in cold temperatures as officials analyze the full scope of the disaster. Among those apparently on board were world-champion athletes returning from a major competition. A commercial passenger jet carrying 64 people crashed into the river after colliding with a military helicopter in mid-air as it approached Reagan National Airport.

The airplane had taken off from Wichita, Kansas, and was just minutes away from landing when the disaster occurred. The impact triggered an explosion before the jet crashed at 8:53 p.m. The number of survivors is unknown, however officials have said there may be none. Several figure skaters, instructors, and family members were on board, having returned from a figure skating development camp in the United States.
Crash Details and Current Rescue Operations At 8:47 p.m., a live webcam from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts apparently acquired images of the accident, which included a fireball followed by a smoke trail. Witnesses alerted authorities, and emergency response teams arrived within minutes. According to a source, up to 15 figure skaters were on board. Among them were Vadim Naumov, a world champion figure skater, and his wife Evgenia Shishkova.

According to reports, one of the passengers could have been their son, Maxim Naumov, a competitive skater who just competed in the U.S. Championships in Wichita. Other sources identified Inna Volyanskaya, a former professional skater and coach at the Washington Figure Skating Club, as another passenger. Vadim and Evgenia’s Legacy in Figure Skating
Vadim and Evgenia began skating together in 1985 and went on to win the 1994 World Championship in pairs figure skating. They finished second place in 1995 before pursuing professional careers.After retiring from competition, the couple relocated to the United States, where they became coaches, teaching young skaters and contributing to the sport’s growth. Their impact went beyond their performances, impacting the careers of subsequent athletes.

The figure skating community and fans were shocked and saddened by the news. One user posted on social media, “I recall them competing. “What a tragedy!” Another commented, “May they all rest in peace.” A third poster mentioned Maxim’s recent involvement in the U.S. Championships, writing, “Naumov is one of our U.S. figure skaters who just recently competed in the U.S. nationals in Wichita, which ended last Sunday.” This is quite sad.”
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and military officials are looking into the reason of the incident. Following the disaster, Reagan National Airport halted all takeoffs and landings.
