Following Pope Francis’ burial, photos of his final resting place were shared. Francis, who has headed the Catholic Church for more than a decade, died peacefully on Monday at Saint Martha House in Vatican City. He was 88. Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell released an emotional statement to convey the news: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father’s residence.
He went on to say, “His entire life was dedicated to serving the Lord and His Church. He taught us to embody Gospel ideals through faithfulness, courage, and universal compassion, particularly for the poorest and most oppressed. With great thanks for his example as a real disciple of the Lord Jesus, we submit Pope Francis’ soul to the limitless, forgiving love of God, One and Triune.”
Following a spectacular public funeral in Rome attended by about 250,000 people, Pope Francis was buried in a private ceremony. Unlike other popes, who are typically buried beneath St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Francis requested an alternative resting place: the Basilica of St. Mary Major, which is some six kilometers from St. Peter’s Square.
Since the burial, mourners have begun to visit the plain white grave and offer their respects. A solitary white rose sits on the grave, which is only marked with the Latin inscription “Franciscus.” A pleasant light shines on the grave, and a copy of the late pope’s pectoral cross hangs on the wall above it. The minimalism of the tomb was intentional. According to PBS News, Francis wanted his last burial place to symbolize the humility he strived for throughout his life.
