Melania wore a lace funeral veil, commonly known as a Mantilla Veil, to show her respect in addition to her black dress. The Mantilla originated in the Catholic faith. The Catholic Company states that it is “often worn by faithful women as a way of emulating Mary, who is the archetype of humility.” Furthermore, the mantilla “signifies the role of women as a life-bearing vessel.”
Melania was observed closing her eyes multiple times during Pope Francis’ funeral service to show her sympathies. Several people online applauded her for wearing the veil.

“Ultimate class and reverence, Melania Trump wearing a Mantilla Veil,” one user said on X, according to Express, while another added: “Melania was perfect this time by wearing black and a mantilla.”
A third said, “First Lady Melania Trump honored Pope Francis with a magnificent black lace veil and elegant dress for his funeral, indicating her sincere appreciation for the occasion. Her clothing not only honored her Catholic faith, but also echoed Jacqueline Kennedy’s legendary style, making it an important fashion statement.”
However, while Melania was hailed by many, she was also criticized. One person pointed out that the First Lady was wearing black stiletto heels, which weren’t appropriate for the occasion. “Why did Melania wear eight-inch heels to the Pope’s funeral? Not appropriate. “These people have no class,” the individual wrote.
