Michelle Obama breaks her Silence on Barack divorce rumors and confirms what we all susoected

On Wednesday, Michelle Obama appeared on Sophia Bush’s podcast, Work in Progress. About nine minutes into the conversation, the former First Lady gave a highly personal comment on the changes in her life since her daughters, Malia (26) and Sasha (23), moved out. She remarked that her favorite aspect of becoming a “empty nester” is simple but liberating:

“[Life] is whatever I want, Sophia,” she replied in a cheerful tone. “It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me.” For years, Obama has navigated the difficult responsibilities of mother, public person, and spouse, frequently putting her husband Barack Obama’s work and her children’s demands ahead of her own. However, now that her family has grown and her personal life has entered a new chapter, she is regaining control.

However, having the ability to make her own judgments wasn’t easy, especially as a woman. Obama described the difficulty many women confront in allowing themselves to prioritize their own needs. “What’s fascinating is that when I answer ‘no,’ most people respond with, ‘I get it.’ “And I’m fine,” Michelle explained. Then her tone changed from fun to serious as she discussed public image and the criticism that can come with declaring her independence.

“I believe women struggle with failing others. This year, folks assumed my husband and I were divorcing because they couldn’t believe I was making my own decision. Aniston rejected the rumors. According to rumors – wild tales, perhaps, but reports nonetheless – questions about the durability of the Obamas’ marriage arose after Michelle neglected to attend both Jimmy Carter’s funeral (on January 9, 2025) and Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Although Obama did not specify which action sparked the divorce rumors, her absence from significant events such as President Trump’s inauguration and President Jimmy Carter’s death fueled the notion, especially since her husband attended both. In January, Vanity Fair linked the claims to an In Touch Weekly report claiming actress Jennifer Aniston was seeking to steal Barack Obama’s heart – an accusation Aniston promptly refuted. “I have met [Barack] once. “I know Michelle better than him,” Aniston replied.
