Instead of shaving a depressed teen’s hair, a stylist teaches people a “lesson” with a 13-hour haircut. And how she looks after that is amazing!

Kayley Olsson has seen her fair share of bad hair days. A hairdresser at Capri Waterloo, in Waterloo, Iowa, she has the privilege of fixing all of those ratchet box-color jobs and butchered self-cuts—am I right, hair stylists? But on Monday, August 7, she “had one of the hardest experiences” she’s ever had with a client. She detailed it in a post on Facebook!

“I had a 16-year[-old] girl come in who has been dealing with severe depression for a few years now. She got to the point where she felt so down and so worthless she couldn’t even brush her hair, she told me she only got up to use the restroom.”The teen told Kayley that she heads back to school in a few weeks, but her school pictures were on Tuesday. Then she told the hairdresser to “just cut it off,” as to not deal with the pain of combing it out.

Kayley writes, “She called herself worthless for it.” Kayley’s heart broke as she heard the young girl express her feelings about herself. Mariah Wenger, her colleague, and she did everything they could to keep the girl’s hair for her. Kayley wishes for this client’s situation to serve as a “lesson” to others: “Mental health is a thing, it affects people all over the world and of all ages!”

Parents should take it seriously and not just push their children away and tell them to get over something they legitimately cannot. A child should never feel so unimportant that they refuse to brush their hair.” The teen sat in Kayley’s chair for eight hours on Monday and five hours on Tuesday. “We finally made this beautiful girl smile and believe she is valuable!”

She told Kayley as she was leaving, “I will actually smile for my school pictures today, you made me feel like myself again.” Depression DOES EXIST. It is not picky about who it attacks, and it, like Satan himself, comes to steal, kill, and destroy. All praise to this wonderful hairdresser for seeing this teen’s true worth and going out of her way to help her beat depression.
