Nearly 15 years after Susan Boyle’s viral Britain’s Got Talent audition, Judge Simon Cowell reflects on how Boyle changed people’s perceptions of celebrity and talent.”I’ll never forget this,” Cowell said Terry Crews during an episode of America’s Got Talent while re-watching a tape from Boyle’s first BGT audition. (Fans will recall that Boyle surprised both the Judges and the audience when she performed “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables.)
“I was having a terrible, terrible day, and I remember saying, ‘I really, really hope she’s not gonna sing,’ because there were so many bad singers that day, and I thought, ‘I just can’t take another one.'” Boyle, on the other hand, sounded like a pure angel when she opened her mouth to sing, and she stunned everyone. “Our expectations were quite low, but she is the perfect example of never judge a book by its cover,” remarked Cowell. “She is the most amazing person.”
This was a lady who lived alone in Scotland, and when she appeared on the show, everything changed. Because there had previously been a preconception that you had to look this way or be this age, and she simply rewrote the rules. “End of story.” Boyle had nothing but positive things to say about Cowell in a 2019 interview with People. “In my career, Simon has been the most influential. He’s been my boss for nearly ten years, and I work hard to make him proud. “He motivates me to keep going and strive for perfection,” she said.
Susan Boyle’s Cover of ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All” Is Stunning She then went on to explain why she enjoys performing so much. “I’m in my own little bubble on stage, telling a story, and it’s really my happy place,” she explained. “I have a lot of fun making the audience happy.” My profession has never been about money or even chart places; I simply enjoy being on stage and singing.”
She was then questioned how she manages to remain humble in the face of her enormous success. “I never want to be a diva, and I believe that having a good group of people around you ensures that you don’t,” she remarked. “I still live in the same house I grew up in, I don’t need a huge mansion for just myself, and I still like to take the bus or walk to the supermarket and choose what I’m having for dinner.”
“I think it’s all about not believing the hype,” she concluded. I’m still the same little girl that walked onto the BGT audition stage almost ten years ago, and I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world and sing in great places, but then I get to come home and just be myself again, so I get the best of both worlds!”
