In my adolescent and prepubescent years, when one creates one’s own thoughts about oneself, I believe I was largely overweight and had very low self-esteem.”
Many people are unaware that Kelly McGillis experienced a terrible rape. It apparently happened while she was studying at Julliard. As a result, Kelly convinced herself that it was a punishment for her sexual orientation, i.e., being lesbian. McGillis came out as gay years after the rumors had spread. Prior to her big unveiling, she sought safety in and among illegal drugs and alcohol misuse. McGillis felt her lack of participation in Top Gun: Maverick was due to her age. “I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,” she stated. “But… I’d rather be completely secure in my skin and myself and what I am at my age than put a value on all of that other stuff.”
