Medications That Don’t Mix Well With Coffee

For most of us, coffee is the essential everyday drink; for the most part, it is safe to consume at least in very discreet doses. However, according to recent research, taking coffee with a certain prescription or over-the-counter medication can lead to some serious side effects. These drugs are called contraindicated drugs; that means two compounds that should not be taken together. So before you whip up your routine latte, make sure you aren’t taking any of these drugs.

1. Ephedrine. Ephedrine is a powerful stimulant known for its ability to enhance the responsiveness of the nervous system. It serves as a helpful remedy for congestion and acts as a bronchodilator for individuals dealing with asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory issues. In addition to its other uses, it is commonly prescribed for narcolepsy, low blood pressure, and menstrual problems.

If you combine this with caffeine, you’ll experience what’s commonly referred to as a hyperstimulus. Given the strong interaction between the two, the combined impact can rapidly overpower the central nervous system, potentially resulting in severe consequences such as heart attack, high blood pressure, or even a stroke! Numerous antibacterial drugs can be purchased without a prescription, but their effectiveness may be compromised when taken with coffee.

For certain people, drinking coffee can cause a temporary spike in blood sugar levels, which can potentially negate the effectiveness of certain antibacterial medications.

2. Theophylline. Theophylline is a compound commonly prescribed to patients suffering from conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis, or asthma. In essence, any disease that causes symptoms such as difficulty breathing or wheezing can be included in this list, as these symptoms stem from a common trigger. Typically, the windpipe and bronchioles experience an influx of thick mucus, leading to constriction of the trachea.

Theophylline works by relaxing and smoothing out the muscles, providing immediate relief to the patient. If you’re well-versed in the effects of coffee, you’re probably aware of its impact on the body. One of these effects is vasodilation, which essentially involves the opening up of blood vessels and the relaxation of muscles. When used together, these two drugs can have a detrimental impact on the patient’s health.

These side effects may include a decrease in blood pressure or irregular heartbeats. If you or someone you care about has asthma, it’s important to be mindful of their caffeine intake. In addition to these, there is a wide range of contraceptives and antidepressants, especially tricyclic antidepressants, that may cause negative symptoms when combined with coffee. It’s always important to seek medical advice before consuming anything, especially if it contains caffeine!
